KAY’S TWO AREN’T ENOUGH, BLUES FALL TO RAMS IN OT

Robert Kay’s two powerplay goals would not be enough as the University of Toronto Varsity Blues dropped a 3-2 overtime decision in a rare mid-week game versus the Ryerson Rams on February 3 at George Bell Arena.

The Blues are now tied with the Carleton Ravens for third place with a 13-8-3 regular-season record, while Ryerson improves to 9-12-3 and moves into a tie with the Nipissing Lakers for fifth place in the OUA East division.

Ryerson’s leading scorer Matt Schmermund (Calahoo, Alta.) tallied his 12th of the season off passes from Moscow native Alexei Dostoinov and Cory Konecny (Stoney Point, Ont.) just 4:31 into the contest. However, Kay would garner his first of the game to even the score with just 10 seconds remaining in the first period, assisted by veterans Brendan Sherrard (Etobicoke, Ont.) and Joe Rand (Hamilton, Ont.).

A native of Orono, Ont., Kay then put U of T ahead on another man advantage, this time finishing off a pass from Blues leading scorer Byron Elliott (Burlington, Ont.) to beat Rams goaltender Paul Gibson (St. Thomas, Ont.).

Ryerson continued to press and were rewarded when Dostoinov found a way past Toronto goaltender Andrew Martin (Mississauga, Ont.) with just over four minutes to go in the second period.

The game continued to go back-and-forth throughout the third period, with Ryerson outshooting Toronto by the slightest of margins (12-11). Neither team would find the back of the net as extra time would ultimately be the deciding factor.

Rams team captain Kevin Krasnowski of Pickering, Ont. would be the overtime hero, scoring with just 31 seconds remaining on the clock to secure Ryerson’s first win over Toronto this season.

Martin posted 30 saves in the loss.

The Varsity Blues return to action on Saturday, February 6 when they host the Nipissing Lakers at Varsity Arena. The puck drops at 7:30 p.m.
