Four first-period goals would be all the University of Toronto Varsity Blues women’s hockey team would need as they defeated the Guelph Gryphons 4-1 in their last game of the regular season on Sunday, February 14 at Gryphon Centre Arena.
With the win, the Blues (14-11-2) finish the regular season in fifth place, one point behind the Gryphons (14-10-3). Toronto will now travel back to Guelph, Ont. for a sudden death OUA quarter-final game against the Gryphons next Saturday, February 20.
Brenley Jorgensen (Kingston, Ont.) got Toronto on the board 36 seconds into the contest as she came flying down the ice to beat two defenceman and roofed the puck past Guelph netminder Danielle Skoufranis (Thornhill, Ont.).
Less than four minutes later, third-year forward Amanda Fawns of Scarborough, Ont. got on the right side of a mad scramble in front of the net to put away a Kelly O’Hanlon (Markham, Ont.) rebound.
Assistant captain Lindsay Hill (Ajax, Ont.) then redirected a Bianca Mirabelli (Oakville, Ont.) slap shot from the point at the midway point of the first period to beat Skoufranis for the third time in 10 minutes.
First-year forward Ragan Danford rounded out Toronto’s scoring at the 15:57 mark as she received a pass from Ottawa native Emily Milito and used her speed to get by the Gryphons defence. The Madoc, Ont. native put the puck along the ice to find the back of the net and give the Blues a commanding 4-0 lead after the first period of play.
The Gryphons began to rally in the second period. Outshooting the Blues 11-4, Guelph finally got on the board with less than three minutes to go in the frame when Carla D’Angelo (Hamilton, Ont.) sent a booming slap shot from the point that beat Toronto goaltender Kendyl Valenta (Brampton, Ont.).
Despite outshooting Toronto 14-3 in the third period, the Gryphons were unable to solve Valenta again as the Blues skated away with the 4-1 victory.
Valenta made 32 saves in the victory. Jorgensen and Hill finish the season tied for sixth in OUA scoring with 30 points apiece.
The Varsity Blues OUA quarter-final game is set for next Saturday, February 20 at Gryphon Centre Arena. The puck drops at 2 p.m.
