MEN’S HOCKEY PUMMELS PALADINS 5-2

Robert Kay and Ed Snetsinger each tallied two goals as the University of Toronto Varsity Blues men’s hockey team defeated the RMC Paladins 5-2 on Friday, February 12 at Constantine Arena in Kingston, Ont.

With only one game remaining in the regular season, the Blues improve to 15-8-4 and are in third place in the OUA East, one point ahead of the Carleton Ravens. The Paladins drop to 5-18-4 and sit in last place in the East.

Kay (Orono, Ont.) opened the scoring with a goal off a pass from fellow second-year forward David Mooney (Toronto) 11:10 into the contest. Toronto maintained the 1-0 advantage heading into the first intermission.

Toronto came out of the gates flying and scored two goals in the first 1:45 of the second frame. Snetsinger (Ajax, Ont.), a fourth-year defenceman and Blues assistant captain, tallied the first just 36 seconds in, assisted by Paul Dupont (Sault Ste. Marie, Ont.) and Kyle Paige (Richmond Hill, Ont.). Kay then added an unassisted marker - his second goal of the night - for the eventual game-winner.

Blues leading scorer Byron Elliott of Burlington, Ont. garnered his 22nd goal of the season less than three minutes later to give U of T a commanding four-goal lead.

RMC forward Shawn Cox (Smith Falls, Ont.) finally got his squad on the board with just over five minutes remaining in the second as he found a way past Blues goaltender Andrew Martin (Mississauga, Ont.).

Justin Lacey of Sudbury, Ont. scored his sixth goal of the season to bring the Paladins within three early in the third period, however, RMC would not solve Martin again. Snetsinger added an insurance marker on the powerplay with less than three minutes remaining to secure the 5-2 victory for the Blues.

Martin made 24 saves in the victory.

The Varsity Blues take on the RMC Paladins again tomorrow night in their last remaining regular season game. Two points would secure Toronto’s third-place standing in the OUA East and a first round best-of-three series versus the sixth-place Ryerson Rams. The puck drops at 7:30 p.m. tomorrow.
