BLUES GET PAST HAWKS IN THRILLING SHOOTOUT WIN

The Varsity Blues men’s hockey defeated the Laurier Golden Hawks 2-1 on Friday, November 26 at Varsity Arena.

Third-year forward and assistant captain Byron Elliott of Burlington, Ont., was the only player to score in the three-player sudden-death shootout, deking Hawks goaltender Ryan Daniels (Pickering, Ont.) and sliding the puck through his legs for the game-winner.

With the win, the Blues improve to 4-7-3 and sit in eighth place in the OUA East, while Laurier drops to 7-5-2 and remain in fourth in the West division.

After a scoreless first period, Laurier’s Mike Gauthier of North Vancouver, B.C., got the visiting squad on the board with a powerplay marker four minutes into the second frame.

The Hawks held onto the 1-0 lead until the third period when Dan Brewer of Cambridge, Ont., received a pass from Matt Walters at the blue line and skated past a Laurier defenceman for a clear shot at Daniels. Despite some tight pressure from behind, Brewer made no mistake and evened the score with a five-hole deke on Daniels.

Blues goaltender Andrew Martin of Mississauga, Ont., made 35 saves in the win.

The Varsity Blues return to action tomorrow night when they host the UOIT Ridgebacks in their annual Minor Hockey Night at Varsity Arena. The puck drops at 7:30 p.m.

Minor hockey players from around the GTA are invited to enjoy an exciting evening at Varsity Arena, which includes a free gift, as well as an opportunity to win an autographed NHL jersey, Toronto Marlies memorabilia, and other great prizes.

Kids will also have a chance to meet the Varsity Blues own mascot Trevor True Blue. And after the game, all are welcome to come and meet the players and get autographs.
