PATRIOTES PUSH PAST BLUES

The Varsity Blues men’s hockey team dropped a 6-2 decision to the UQTR Patriotes on Saturday, October 9 at Varsity Arena.

Francis Charland of Victoriaville, Que., led the Patriotes with two powerplay goals and two assists in the victory.

UQTR came out flying and outshot Toronto 31-17 over the first two periods of play.

Etienne Bellavance-Martin of St-Jean-Chrysostome, Que., opened the scoring six minutes into the game and the Patriotes held on to a narrow 1-0 lead through the first period.

Charland tallied two powerplay markers at the 1:43 and 18:32 marks of the second period to build a comfortable 3-0 advantage for UQTR heading into the final frame.

Jean-Sebastien Breton of Pincourt, Que., scored just nine seconds into the third period when he sent a beautiful shot over the glove of Blues goaltender Andrew Martin (Mississauga, Ont.).

The Blues broke the shut out when third-year forward Robert Kay of Orono, Ont., finished off a beautiful passing play with Byron Elliott (Burlington, Ont.) and Kyle Ventura of Scarborough, Ont.

That same trio also had a hand in Toronto’s second goal of the game, as both Kay and Ventura set up Elliot’s marker at 13:15 in the third period.

Martin made 37 saves in the loss.

The Varsity Blues return to action next Friday, October 15 as they host the Queen’s Gaels at Varsity Arena. The puck drops at 7:30 p.m.
