First-year forward Anthony Bergin was the shoot out hero as the Varsity Blues men’s hockey team earned their first win of the season with a 4-3 victory over the Carleton Ravens on Friday, October 29 at Varsity Arena.
After two saves by Blues goaltender Andrew Martin and a goal off the stick of Toronto’s first shooter Blake Boddy, Bergin came down and made no mistake, deking Carleton goaltender Matthew Dopud (Pointe-Claire, Que.) to find the back of the net.
Martin (Mississauga, Ont.) made 44 saves in the win and Bergin was named the Varsity Blues player of the game for his superior performance on the night.
A native of Scarborough, Ont., Bergin opened the scoring with his first career goal just three minutes into the contest. The Ravens quickly evened the game with a powerplay marker from Ryan Berard (Niagara Falls, Ont.).
Both teams exchanged scoring opportunities throughout the first half of the second period; however, a hard open-ice hit by fourth-year Blues defenceman Sean Kliewer would spark Toronto’s offence at the midway point of the game.
Two U of T rookies went on to score back-to-back goals less than two minutes apart. Toronto native Michael Markovic finished off a tic-tac-toe passing play with veterans Kliewer and Dan Brewer before Boddy tallied his first career goal, roofing the puck over the glove of Dopud.
The Ravens answered back and narrowed the gap to one in the last minute of the second period when Ottawa native Jeff Hayes found a hole over the shoulder of Martin and slid the puck into the net.
Toronto came out strong in the third period; however, Carleton turned up the tempo midway through the frame and tied the score when captain Brad Good of Kitchener, Ont., sent a low point shot through traffic and into the Blues net.
The Ravens held the upper hand in the overtime period, outshooting Toronto 5-1. Martin stood tall and came up with some big saves in the dying seconds to force the shoot out.
The Varsity Blues return to action tomorrow night when they host the Concordia Stingers at Varsity Arena. The puck drops at 7:30 p.m.
