The Varsity Blues men’s hockey team fell 3-2 in overtime to the Concordia Stingers on Saturday, October 23 at Ed Meagher Arena in Montreal.
With the loss, the Blues are now 0-1-3 and sit in ninth place in the OUA East standings.
Concordia opened the scoring with a shorthanded marker off the stick of Derek Famulare 13 minutes into the first period. Toronto answered back less than two minutes later when fourth-year forward Dan Brewer of Cambridge, Ont., potted his first goal of the season, assisted by Joel Lenius and Paul Dupont.
The game was deadlocked at 1-1 after the first period of play.
Second-year Blues forward Kyle Ventura got the go-ahead goal on a powerplay midway through the game and Toronto held onto the 2-1 lead until the dying minutes of the third period.
The Stingers came out flying in the third, outshooting the Blues 17-11. Marc-Andre Element evened the score to force overtime with just over four minutes remaining in regulation.
With Blues defenceman Sean Kliewer in the penalty box on a holding the stick call, the Blues found themselves on the wrong side of a four-on-three situation. Concordia capitalized midway through Toronto’s penalty kill when Charles-Antoine Messier shot the puck past goaltender Andrew Martin for the game-winner.
The Varsity Blues return to action tomorrow when they travel to take on the UQTR Patriotes. The puck drops at 2 p.m.
