HILL LEADS BLUES TO 6-1 VICTORY OVER WARRIORS

Third-year forward Lindsay Hill tallied one goal and three assists to lead the University of Toronto Varsity Blues women’s hockey team to a 6-1 victory over the Waterloo Warriors on Saturday, January 9 at Columbia Ice Field.

With the win, the Blues improve to 8-6-2 and sit in fifth place in the OUA standings.

The Blues dominated from the puck drop as team captain Karolina Urban (Kamloops, B.C.) opened the scoring just 25 seconds into the game, finishing off a fast rush with linemates Hill and Brenley Jorgensen (Kingston, Ont.).

With Jorgensen in the penalty box, forward Emma McMillan (Hastings, Ont.) recorded what would be the Warriors only goal of the game off a scramble in front of the Blues net.

Third-year forward Amanda Fawns (Scarborough, Ont.) quickly responded, scoring the eventual game-winner at the 7:15 mark of the first period off passes from Kelly O’Hanlan (Markham, Ont.) and Allie White (Metcalfe, Ont.).

Urban added her second goal from Hill and Jorgensen just over a minute later to put the Blues up by two.

Toronto extended their lead again on their second powerplay opportunity of the afternoon as Urban sent a beautiful cross-crease pass to Jorgensen on the back post, who made no mistake finding the back of the net.

The Blues held a 4-1 lead after the first period of play.

Hill scored her 12th goal of the season 1:13 into the second frame, as she sent a booming slap shot over the glove of Warriors goaltender Kahla Stern (Paris, Ont.) and into the net.

U of T ran into some penalty trouble in the third period, however, sophomore goaltender Kendyl Valenta (Brampton, Ont.) stood on her head to keep the game out of reach.

Second-year forward Sarah Stephen (Pickering, Ont.) scored her first goal of the season with 1:17 remaining in the game.

Valenta made 41 saves in the win.

Hill is now ranked third in OUA scoring with 12 goals and nine assists in 16 games.

The Varsity Blues return to action tomorrow night (Jan. 10) as they head back to Waterloo, Ont. to take on the No. 2 Laurier Golden Hawks. Game time is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
