Randi Lynn Wilson scored both goals as the Waterloo Warriors defeated the University of Toronto Varsity Blues women’s hockey team 2-1 in a shootout on Tuesday, January 5 at Varsity Arena.
The Blues are now 7-6-2 and sit in fifth place in the OUA standings.
After a scoreless first period, Wilson (Dublin, Ont.) got the Warriors on the board midway through the game when she buried an Emma McMillan (Hastings, Ont.) rebound.
Still down 1-0 in the third period, U of T began to rally and created good scoring opportunities. With Warriors defenceman Jennifer Knowlton (Listowel, Ont.) in the penalty box, fifth-year veteran Annie DelGuidice (Hamilton, Ont.) scooped up an Emily Milito (Ottawa, Ont.) rebound and wrapped the puck around the net to beat Waterloo goaltender Kahla Stern (Paris, Ont.) and even the score.
The remaining ten minutes and overtime failed to produce a winner as the game headed into a three-player shootout.
As Waterloo’s first shooter, Wilson pulled a nifty move to beat Blues goaltender Kendyl Valenta (Brampton, Ont.) and score what would be the eventual game-winner.
DelGuidice was named the Varsity Blues player of the game for her solid effort on the night.
The Varsity Blues return to action on Saturday, January 9 when they travel to Waterloo, Ont. for a rematch with the Warriors. Game time is scheduled for 2 p.m.
