ELLIOTT COMES UP BIG, BLUES DOWN PALADINS IN OT

Byron Elliott scored on a penalty shot with 7.36 seconds remaining in overtime as the University of Toronto Varsity Blues men’s hockey team edged the RMC Paladins 3-2 on Saturday, January 30 at Varsity Arena.

Elliott of Burlington, Ont. made no mistake, faking a shot before sliding the puck under a sprawling RMC goaltender Andrew Flemming (Quispamsis, N.B.) for the game-winner.

With the win, the Blues improve to 13-8-1-2 and are now tied with the Carleton Ravens for third place in the OUA East.

Second-year forward Bryden Teich (Toronto) opened the scoring when he jumped on a Brendan Sherrard (Etobicoke, Ont.) rebound just 3:36 into the contest. Rookie forward Kyle Paige (Richmond Hill, Ont.) would then net his fourth of the season when he wired a puck into the top corner to give U of T a two-goal lead at the first intermission.

The Paladins picked up the pace in the second frame and were rewarded when Rob Graydon of Stirling, Ont. found a way past Blues goaltender Andrew Martin (Mississauga, Ont.) on a man advantage.

The Blues held a narrow 2-1 lead going into the third period.

RMC continued their strong play throughout the third and evened the score when forward Justin Lacey (Sudbury, Ont.) stuffed a Matthew Pinder (Calgary, Alta.) rebound in at the side of the Blues net to force the overtime frame.

Both teams exchanged scoring opportunities in the extra period, however, it wasn’t until Elliott netted his league-leading 20th goal that the Blues earned their eighth win in the last nine games.

The Varsity Blues return to action on Wednesday, February 3 when they take on the Ryerson Rams at George Bell Arena. The puck drops at 7:30 p.m.
