The University of Toronto Varsity Blues men’s hockey team closed out their 2008-09 regular season with a 2-0 victory over the Ryerson Rams on Friday, February 13 at George Bell Arena.
The Blues got off to a good start, controlling play for the majority of the first period. Toronto opened the scoring with a shorthanded marker at 7:51, when second-year forward Sean Fontyn (Mississauga, Ont.) skated down the right wing and snapped a quick wrist shot past Ryerson goaltender Louie George (Waterloo, Ont.).
Despite outshooting Ryerson 15-0 in the second period, Toronto was unable to put one in, as George stood on his head to keep the game within one.
Ryerson built up some momentum in the third period, but second-year goalie Andrew Martin (Mississauga, Ont.) denied anything that came his way. Paul Dupont’s (Sault Ste. Marie, Ont.) empty-net goal with 45 seconds remaining would secure the Blues 2-0 victory.
Martin made 16 saves for his second shutout of the season.
Toronto finishes the regular season atop the OUA mid East division with a 14-11-0-3 record and has earned a bye in the first round of the playoffs.
