The University of Toronto Varsity Blues men’s hockey team defeated the Ottawa Gee-Gees 4-1 on Friday, November 6 at Varsity Arena.
Second-year forward David Mooney (Toronto) opened the scoring just 4:12 into the game as he notched his third goal of the season off passes from Sean Fontyn (Mississauga, Ont.) and Robert Kay (Oronto, Ont.).
Mississauga, Ont. native Claudia Cowdrey scored what would be the eventual game winner at the 12:06 minute mark of the first period and Toronto headed into the first intermission with a 2-0 lead.
U of T got into penalty trouble early in the second period and Ottawa took full advantage, scoring their only goal of the night off the stick of first-year forward Paul Forster (North Vancouver, B.C.).
The Blues again extended their lead to two as OUA leading scorer Byron Elliott (Burlington, Ont.) tallied his fifth goal of the season on a powerplay, assisted by Mooney and Blues assistant captain Ed Snetsinger (Ajax, Ont.).
Toronto held a 3-1 going into the final frame.
The Blues added an insurance marker just 2:02 into the third period as Kay beat Ottawa goaltender Riley Whitlock (Calgary, Alta.) for U of T’s second powerplay goal of the night.
Martin made 24 saves in the victory and Elliott was named the Blues player of the game for his two-point performance.
The Varsity Blues return to action this Sunday, November 8 when they travel to Montreal to take on the McGill Redmen. The puck drops at 2 p.m.
