Two first period goals would be all the University of Toronto Varsity Blues women’s hockey team would need as they defeated the Brock Badgers 2-1 on Sunday, November 29 at Seymour-Hannah Centre in St. Catharines, Ont.
With the win, the Blues improve their record to 5-5-1 and sit tied for fifth place in the OUA.
Toronto opened the scoring 12:05 into the game when veteran Annie DelGuidice (Hamilton, Ont.) came rushing down the ice and sent a beautiful pass to fellow assistant captain Emily Milito (Ottawa) who made no mistake finding the back of the net for her fifth goal of the season.
Less than four minutes later, Amanda Fawns (Scarborough, Ont.) tallied what would be the eventual game-winner on a five-on-three advantage. The third-year forward picked up the puck off the face off and wired a shot past Badgers goaltender Beth Clause (Hamilton, Ont.).
After a scoreless second period, Brock would finally get on the board on a powerplay opportunity with just over six minutes remaining in the game. After a scramble in front of the Blues net, first-year Badgers forward Sara Brady (Thunder Bay, Ont.) spoiled the Blues shut out when she tapped a rebound behind U of T goaltender Melissa Muir (Winnipeg, Man.).
Toronto held off any other Brock chances as they skated away with their first victory in three games.
Muir made 22 saves in the victory.
The Varsity Blues return to action next Saturday, December 5 when they host the Windsor Lancers at Varsity Arena. The puck drops at 6 p.m.
