The University of Toronto Varsity Blues men’s hockey team dropped a 2-1 decision to the Brock Badgers on Saturday, November 21 at Varsity Arena.
The Blues are currently 5-7-2 and sit in sixth place in the OUA East division.
The Badgers opened the scoring on a powerplay with less than three minutes remaining in the first period. Second-year forward Derek Brochu (Welland, Ont.) found a hole through Blues goaltender Andrew Martin (Mississauga, Ont.) to put Brock up 1-0 heading into the second frame.
With Brock defenceman Isaac Smeltzer (Estevan, Sask.) in the penalty box, the Blues were able to even the score as second-year forward Byron Elliott (Burlington, Ont.) walked out from the corner and sent a low shot past Badgers goaltender Mark Yetman (Mount Pearl, Nfld.).
The Badgers scored the eventual game-winner just five minutes later when Vince Scott (Mississauga, Ont.) sent a pass to rookie Joe Tolles (Toldeo, Ohio) all alone in front and he one-timed a slap shot into the bottom left corner of the net.
The play went back-and-forth through the third period with neither team creating any solid scoring chances. Despite a six-on-five advantage for 52 seconds, U of T was unable to tie things up as the Badgers skated away with the one-goal victory.
Martin made 30 saves in the loss and second-year forward David Mooney (Toronto) was named the Varsity Blues player of the game.
The Blues return to action next Friday, November 27 when they host the UQTR Patriotes at Varsity Arena. Toronto then hosts their 14th annual minor hockey night on Saturday, November 28 when they take on the McGill Redmen. The puck drops at 7:30 p.m. on both days.
