Steven Kung was the high scorer and player of the game as the University of Toronto Varsity Blues men’s volleyball team fell to the Waterloo Warriors, 3-2, on Sunday, November 1 at the Athletic Centre Sports Gym.
Mart Alexander Poldma (Toronto, Ont.) started things off for the Warriors who quickly took the lead in the first set. Kung, the 2008-09 OUA player of the year, came through with three of his signature serves, narrowing the gap for the Blues. Mike Manning (Vernon, B.C.) and Mitchell Woodside (Clyde River, P.E.I.) helped to tie the match (14-14), however the Warriors went on a 11-4 run to take the first game 25-18.
Toronto took the second set 25-20 thanks to Manning, Kung, and Adam Palmer (Ottawa, Ont.), but lost the third by the same margin. Aaron Dam (Grimsby, Ont.) and Tyler Vivian (Mitchell, Ont.) were in fine form for the Warriors as they led their team to a 2-1 lead.
The fourth set proved to be intense, as the game tied nine times before Toronto clinched the 26-24 win to force a fifth and final set.
The Warriors dominated the final set. Despite tying things up twice at the beginning of the game, the Blues couldn’t hold the game for long, and Waterloo took the match by three points (15-12).
Dam was named the Warriors player of the game with 12 kills, while Vivian had 14 kills and 10 digs in the victory. Kung tallied 19 of his powerful signature kills for the Blues, and Manning tallied 17 kills in the loss. Blues setter Deagan McDonald (Calgary, Alta.) recorded 35 assists in the loss.
