MEN’S HOCKEY GALLOPS OVER GEE-GEES 2-1

Two goals in 29 seconds would be all the University of Toronto Varsity Blues men’s hockey team would need as they defeated the Ottawa Gee-Gees 2-1 on Friday, October 9 at the uOttawa Sports Plex.

The Blues opened up the 2009-10 season right, outshooting the Gee-Gees 15-4 in the first period. Ottawa goaltender Riley Whitlock (Calgary, Alta.) came up with some huge saves to leave the game scoreless heading into the second period.

With Ottawa defenceman Gabriel Houde (Pontiac, Que.) in the penalty box, the Blues finally got on the board when Toronto natives David Mooney and Bryden Teich set up first-year forward Brent McGrail (Hamilton, Ont.) for his first goal in the Blue and White.

Second-year forward Sean Fontyn (Mississauga, Ont.) found the back of the net just 29 seconds later to give the Blues a 2-0 lead heading into the final frame.

The Gee-Gees came out hungry to score and did just that when Simren Sandu (Calgary, Alta.) found a way past Blues goaltender Andrew Martin (Mississauga, Ont.) at the 7:18 mark in the third period.

Ottawa continued to press throughout the remaining 12 minutes, however the Blues stood their ground. Despite some physical play and a six-on-five disadvantage for 1:24, Martin was able to turn all other shots aside as Toronto skated away with their first victory of the 2009-10 season.

The Varsity Blues return to action tomorrow afternoon (Oct. 10) as they take on the Carleton Ravens at the Carleton University Ice House in Ottawa, Ont. Game time is scheduled for 3 p.m.
