The University of Toronto Varsity Blues men’s volleyball team dropped a 3-0 (25-19, 25-17, 25-16) decision to the Guelph Gryphons on Friday, October 30 at the Athletic Centre Sports Gym.
The closest game of the night came in the first as the Blues only trailed 8-6 at the first technical time out. The Gryphons gradually extended the gap and second-year right side hitter Winston Rosser (Whitby, Ont.) capped it off with a huge kill to take the first game 25-19.
Guelph carried that momentum into the second game, leading 16-9 at the second technical time out. Fourth-year Blues middle hitter Matt Stefanoff (Unionville, Ont.) started to rally the troops with a huge block on Rosser, however U of T could not overcome the deficit and dropped the second game 24-17.
The third game looked promising for Toronto, who were down a mere five points (13-8) midway through the match. However, the Gryphons stood their ground and two big kills from Rosser and fifth-year veteran Jonathan Whitton (Edmonton, Alta.) would seal the 3-0 victory.
Rosser led all players with 15 kills and was named the Gryphons player of the game for his efforts. Riley McAllister (Whitby, Ont.) added 10 digs in the victory.
Second-year standout Mike Manning (Vernon, B.C.) was named the Varsity Blues player of the game for his six kill-seven dig performance. Veteran Steven Kung (Toronto) tallied six kills and nine digs in the loss.
The Varsity Blues return to action on Sunday, November 1 as they host the Waterloo Warriors at the Athletic Centre Sports Gym. Opening serve is scheduled for 4 p.m.
