ELLIOTT, KAY LEAD BLUES TO 3-1 VICTORY

Byron Elliott and Robert Kay combined for six points as the University of Toronto Varsity Blues men’s hockey team defeated the Concordia Stingers 3-1 on Friday, October 30 at Ed Meagher Arena in Montreal, Que.

Both second-year forwards, Elliott (Burlington, Ont.) and Kay (Orono, Ont.) each scored one goal and added two assists on the night.

Elliott opened the scoring 12:57 into the first period with assists from Kay and linemate David Mooney (Toronto). The Blues outshot the Stingers 16-12 and held a one-goal advantage after the first period of play.

The play went back-and-forth throughout the second period, with both teams recording numerous chances to score. With Blues forward Brent McGrail (Mississauga, Ont.) in the penalty box for hooking, Marc-Andre Element (Cadillac, Que.) found a way past Blues goaltender Andrew Martin (Mississauga, Ont.) for his first powerplay marker of the season.

The game was tied 1-1 heading into the final frame.

The play continued up and down the ice throughout the first half of the third period as both teams searched for the go-ahead goal. It finally came when Blues captain Brendan Sherrard (Etobicoke, Ont.) and Elliott assisted as Kay put one past Concordia goaltender Maxime Joyal (Chateauguay, Que.) with less than 10 minutes remaining in the game.

Mooney added an insurance marker less than three minutes later as the Blues skated away with a 3-1 victory.

Martin was solid between the pipes, making 36 saves in the Blues fourth victory of the season.

The Varsity Blues return to action tomorrow afternoon as they take on the UQTR Patriotes at 2 p.m.
