MEN’S HOCKEY GETS PAST RYERSON 3-1

The University of Toronto Varsity Blues men’s hockey team defeated the Ryerson Rams 3-1 in their 2009-10 homeopener on Sunday, October 18 at Varsity Arena.

The Blues opened up the scoring just 2:42 into the game when second-year forward Claudio Cowdrey (Mississauga, Ont.) sent a pass to linemate Byron Elliott (Burlington, Ont.) who made no mistake, one-timing it past Rams goaltender Paul Gibson (St. Thomas, Ont.).

Ryerson picked up the pace, recording many scoring chances and hitting two posts throughout the rest of the first period. The Rams finally got on the board when Matt Schmermund (Calahoo, Alta.) made a centering pass to Cory Konecny (Stoney Point, Ont.) who sent a snap shot into the top corner of the net.

Just 55 seconds later, Toronto native Bryden Teich tipped a Robert Kay (Orono, Ont.) shot that trickled through a hole and into the net.

With 31 seconds remaining, fifth-year Ryerson forward Kevin Day (Toronto) split the Toronto defence and found himself all alone, however, Blues goaltender Andrew Martin (Mississauga, Ont.) came up with a huge stop to hold onto Toronto’s 2-1 lead after the first period of play.

The Blues came out flying in the second period, outshooting the Rams 17-7, but were unable to convert on any opportunities.

After the scoreless second period, U of T added an insurance marker on the powerplay 6:31 into the final frame when first-year forward Brent McGrail (Mississauga, Ont.) tipped a Sean Kliewer (Brunkid, Man.) point shot past Gibson. The Rams attempted to rally but Martin turned all other shots aside as the Blues skated away with a 3-1 victory.

Martin made 36 saves and was named the Blues player of the game for his solid effort in net.

The Varsity Blues return to action next Friday, October 23 when they host the Carleton Ravens at Varsity Arena. The puck drops at 7:30 p.m.
