The University of Toronto Varsity Blues women’s field hockey team won both of their games this past weekend (October 17-18), defeating the York Lions and Queen’s Gaels to improve their record to an impressive 7-1-3.
On Saturday, Oct. 17, the Varsity Blues took on the York Lions at Iceland’s Fields in Mississauga. The Blues were dominant throughout most of the game, forcing many penalty corners and peppering York goalie Brittney Blount (Ottawa) with countless shots. The OUA all-star kept her team in the game, making numerous saves on the Blues’ forwards. However, fifth-year veteran Rianna Sterk (Embro, Ont.) would finally solve Blount late in the first half, putting the ball away off a short corner.
Although the Blues continued their dominance in the second half, they would not find the goal again, as the Ottawa native put on a goalkeeping clinic in one of her best games of the year.
Nonetheless, Toronto would go on to a 1-0 victory in their only game of the day.
The Blues would find their finishing touch in their second game of the weekend, shutting out the Queen’s Gaels in a 4-0 win at Varsity Centre on Sunday, Oct.18.
The scoring was spread out, as three different Toronto players got on the score sheet. Mississauga native Kyesia O’Neale and Angela Jennings (Ottawa) would each score off of penalty corners, while Sterk would tally her second goal of the weekend.
Natalie Provenzano found the net for her seventh goal of the season, moving her into a tie with Kristen Shier (North Vancouver, B.C.) for the team lead. The Richmond Hill native is also second in scoring amongst OUA rookies.
The Varsity Blues come out of the weekend sitting in second place in the OUA with 24 total points and will finish off the regular season next weekend (October 24-25). Two of the final three matches are against the third-place Waterloo Warriors and fourth-place Western Mustangs, who sit only one and four points back of the Blues, respectively.
