The University of Toronto Varsity Blues men’s hockey team dropped two games to the Windsor Lancers this weekend (Jan. 16-17) at Windsor Arena.
After a scoreless first period on Friday night, Mark Thorburn (Sault Ste. Marie, Ont.) and Brock Zinken (Linwood, Ont.) set up Brett Vandehogen (Chatham, Ont.) for what would be the eventual game winner with just over two minutes left in the second period.
Midway through the third, Vandehogen would add his second goal of the game, again assisted by Thorburn and Zinken, to secure the 2-0 Windsor victory.
Toronto was unable to bounce back, falling 4-1 in Saturday’s game. Brett Oliphant (Woodslee, Ont.) opened up the scoring early for the Lancers to build a 1-0 lead after the first period.
Windsor defenceman Jon Ryan (Enfield, N.S.) would add an even strength goal midway through the game to put the Blues down by two. However, Toronto finally got on the board when Sean Kliewer (Brunkild, Man.) and Joe Rand (Hamilton, Ont.) set up Paul Dupont (Sault Ste. Marie, Ont.) for a short-handed marker with less than two minutes to go in the second period.
Down one goal in the final frame, the Blues ran into penalty trouble and the Lancers took full advantage, scoring two powerplay goals early in the third period to secure the 4-1 victory.
The Varsity Blues return to action next Thursday, January 22 when they travel across town to take on the Ryerson Rams at George Bell Arena. The puck drops at 7:30 p.m.
