The University of Toronto Varsity Blues men’s hockey team fell 6-2 to the No. 6 Laurier Golden Hawks on Saturday, January 10 at Varsity Arena.
Laurier got on the board first as third-year defenceman Chad Kennedy (Mississauga, Ont.) sent a breakaway pass to Ryan Bellows (St. Catharines, Ont.) who roofed the puck past Blues goaltender Andrew Martin (Mississauga, Ont.).
Five minutes later Kyle Ventura (Scarborough, Ont.) sent a beautiful pass to Blues leading scorer Byron Elliott (Burlington, Ont.) who went five-hole to tie things up at one apiece.
Toronto got into penalty trouble midway through the first period and Laurier took full advantage. Up two players, Mark Voakes (St. Thomas, Ont.) sent a point shot through traffic and his brother, Craig Voakes (St. Thomas, Ont.), was their to bury the rebound. The Golden Hawks scored a similar goal on the next shift as Nathan Peacok (Tillsonburg, Ont.) tapped in a Tyler Townsend (Tavistock, Ont.) rebound to take a two goal lead.
Less than two minutes later, Elliott picked up a Sean Kliewer (Brunkild, Man.) rebound and passed it to Robert Kay (Orono, Ont.) who notched the Blues second goal to round out the action-packed first period. Laurier held a 3-2 lead after 20 minutes of play.
Bellows would add his second goal midway through the game, taking a pass from Mark Voakes in the high slot to find the back of the Blues net.
Mark Voakes tapped in a Phillip Magistrale (Tsawwassen, B.C.) rebound 23 seconds into the third period and Jeff Borrows (London, Ont.) tipped in a Garrett Sinfield (London, Ont.) point shot with 32 seconds left in the game to secure the 6-2 victory for the Hawks.
The Varsity Blues return to action next weekend (Jan. 16-17) when they travel to Windsor for a doubleheader against the Lancers. The puck drops on Friday at 7:05 p.m. with Saturday’s game scheduled for 2:05 p.m.
