BLUES SHUT OUT LANCERS, EDGE MUSTANGS

The University of Toronto Varsity Blues women’s hockey team came away with two wins on the road this weekend (Nov. 15-16), shutting out the Windsor Lancers 3-0 on Saturday and defeating the Western Mustangs 4-3 in a shoot-out on Sunday.

The No. 7 Blues scored all three of their goals in the second period against the Lancers on Saturday afternoon. Third-year forward Emily Milito (Ottawa, Ont.) took a pass from Keswick, Ont. native Kelly Setter for the first goal on a Blues powerplay. Annie DelGuidice (Hamilton, Ont.) scored an even-strength marker for Toronto just five minutes later and Karolina Urban tallied another powerplay goal for the Blues with less than two minutes to go in the period.

Toronto goaltender Kendyl Valenta (Brampton, Ont.) made 28 saves and earned her third shutout of the season in the 3-0 victory.

Blues assistant captain Amy Cornell (Oakville, Ont.) opened up the scoring in Sunday’s matchup, as she sent a booming slap shot into the top corner of the net with only one second to go in the first period.

Toronto got into trouble in the second period as Brittany Buck (Etobicoke, Ont.) scored on a Western powerplay to tie things up and Holly Ouelette (Toronto) added a short-handed goal, building a 2-1 Mustangs lead going into the final frame.

Kaitlyn Maddigan (Brampton, Ont.) notched another Western goal early in the third period, however, Toronto began to rally. Urban picked up a rebound to score her second goal of the weekend on a Blues man-advantage to narrow Western’s lead to one. With less than three minutes to go, first-year forward Cailie Bazak (Peterborough, Ont.) fired a shot from the high-slot through the legs of Mustangs goaltender Danielle Le Ber (London, Ont.) to tie things up, sending the game into overtime.

After a scoreless overtime period, the game headed into a shoot-out. DelGuidce scored first for the Blues, wiring a shot into the top corner over Le Ber’s glove. Ouellette then scored for the Mustangs to even things at one. Cornell was Toronto’s second shooter, and followed in DelGuidice’s footsteps, also scoring top glove for what would be the eventual shootout winner.

Valenta stopped the remaining Western shooters and the Blues came away with their second overtime shoot-out victory of the season.

With the victories this weekend, Toronto improves their record to 8-3-0-0 and is currently tied for second-place with the Guelph Gryphons.

The Varsity Blues return home to host the No. 2 Laurier Golden Hawks on Saturday, November 22 at Varsity Arena. The puck drops at 7:30 p.m.
