MEN’S HOCKEY STINGS CONCORDIA

Byron Elliott (Burlington, Ont.) scored two goals and added one assist as the University of Toronto Varsity Blues men’s hockey team came away with a 4-2 victory over the Concordia Stingers on Saturday, November 15 in the 13th annual Minor Hockey Night at Varsity Arena.

The Blues got on the board late in the first period, scoring two power-play goals in 11 seconds. Claudio Cowdrey (Mississauga, Ont.) fed a beautiful pass to Elliott in front of the net, who one timed Toronto’s first goal of the game. On the very next play, Kyle Ventura (Scarborough, Ont.) skated down the wing and sent a shot towards the net that trickled through Concordia goaltender Maxime Joyal (Chateauguay, Que.). The Blues held a 2-0 lead at the end of the first period.

Concordia put the pressure on in the second period. Marc-Andre Element (Cadellac, Que.) sent a shot through Blues goaltender Russ Brownell (Oakville, Ont.) on a five-on-three advantage to put his squad on the board. With less than two minutes to go in the period, first-year forward Nicolas D’Aoust (Lorraine, Que.) wired a shot into the top corner of the net to tie things up going into the final frame.

Toronto came out strong in the third period, determined to get the go-ahead goal. Elliott did just that, digging the puck out of traffic and tapping it in for his second goal of the night. Second-year forward Joel Lenius (Markham, Ont.) added some insurance with seven minutes to go, tipping a Brendan Sherrard (Toronto) shot into the net.

The Varsity Blues are on the road next weekend, as they travel to take on the McGill Redmen on Friday, November 21st and the Carleton Ravens on Saturday, November 22nd. Friday’s game is scheduled for 7 p.m., with Saturday set to start at 3 p.m.
