The University of Toronto Varsity Blues men’s hockey team went 1-1 this weekend (Oct. 17-18), falling 4-2 to the UOIT Ridgebacks on Friday before mounting a huge comeback to defeat the York Lions 4-3 on Saturday.
Toronto got off to a slow start on Friday night against the Ridgebacks and found themselves down 3-0 midway through the game.
First-year standout Kyle Ventura (Scarborough, Ont.) notched the Blues first goal of the game from fourth-year captain Brendan Sherrard (Toronto, Ont.) and linemate Byron Elliott (Burlington, Ont.) on a power-play.
Four minutes later, 2007-08 OUA second team all-star Ed Snetsinger (Ajax, Ont.) buried Toronto’s second goal from Ventura and Elliott to cut the deficit to two.
The Blues were unable to capitalize again and the Ridgebacks added an empty net goal to complete the 4-2 win.
Saturday’s game started the same way and Toronto found themselves down by three goals after the first 12 minutes of the game. However, the Blues stuck with it and began to rally.
Sherrard got the Blues on board with a power-play goal off a pass from fellow veteran Joe Rand (Hamilton, Ont.). A minute later, Ventura tallied Toronto’s second goal and the Blues trailed 3-2 at the end of an eventful first period.
The second period saw first-year forward Paul Dupont (Sault Ste. Marie, Ont.) notch the tying goal for Toronto and Elliott scored a short-handed marker for what would be the game-winning goal with less than five minutes left in the second period.
The Blues carried the play for the rest of the game to skate away with the 4-3 victory.
Second-year Toronto goaltender Andrew Martin (Mississauga, Ont.) made 42 saves in his first game of the season.
The Varsity Blues travel to Kingston to take on the Queen’s Gaels next Saturday, October 25 at the Memorial Centre. Game time is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
