Fourth-year veteran Mike Smerek earned three medals and broke the CIS record in the men’s 50-metre butterfly in leading the Varsity Blues men’s swimming team to a CIS silver-medal finish this past weekend in Montreal.
 
The St. Catharines, Ont., native touched the wall in 23.33 seconds to set a new CIS national record in the 50 butterfly.  The kinesiology & physical education major claimed his first medal the day before, finishing first in the 100-metre butterfly in a time of 52.87 seconds.
 
Smerek also helped Toronto’s 4x100 freestyle relay team to a bronze medal (3:19.96). U of T’s top male swimmer of the weekend, Smerek was a large reason that the Blues came within only 11 points of the national title.
