Third-year standout Zack Chetrat successfully defended two national titles and earned a total of four medals to lead the Varsity Blues to a fourth-place finish at the 2011 CIS swimming championships, February 24-26, in Calgary.
The Oakville, Ont., native opened the meet with a personal best time of 53.30 seconds to earn his second consecutive title in the men’s 100-metre butterfly.
Chetrat earned his second gold medal of the meet on Day 2, finishing a full two seconds ahead of Canada West champion David Dimitrov of Calgary, to claim his third title in as many years in the men’s 200-metre butterfly (1:57.45).
As a CIS gold medalist, Chetrat automatically earns an invitation to represent Canada in August at the 2011 Summer Universiade in Shenzhen, China.
An economics and political science major, Chetrat then swam the first leg and led U of T’s 4x200 freestyle relay team to a bronze medal in a time of 7:21.30.
The 2011 CIS first team all-Canadian capped off the meet with a bronze medal in the men’s 1500-metre freestyle, behind Olympian and CIS swimmer of the year Ryan Cochrane.
