The Varsity Blues lead the men’s standings after Day 2 of the 2013 CIS swimming championships at Calgary Aquatic Centre.
The Blues sit first with 395 points, eight points ahead of the defending champion UBC Thunderbirds (387). The host Calgary Dinos are third with 331 points heading into the final day of competition.
UBC’s women hold a dominant lead with 476.5 points, with Calgary in second (380) and the Blues in third place (203).
Toronto earned six more medals on Friday night, with a trio of men leading the way.
Mike Smerek (St. Catharines, Ont.) opened Day 2 with U of T’s first gold medal of the meet, winning his third consecutive men’s 50 butterfly title in a time of 23.69 seconds.
Fellow veteran Frank Despond followed suit by successfully defending his title in the men’s 400 freestyle. The Millgrove, Ont., native touched the wall in 3:49.77, a full two seconds ahead of silver medalist Eric Hedlin of Victoria (3:51.88).
Oakville, Ont., native Zack Chetrat earned the CIS grand slam award, winning his fourth career 200 butterfly title in a time of 1:55.59. He won the silver medal in the 100 fly on Day 1 of the championships.
A quick turnaround saw Chetrat swam the final leg of U of T’s silver-medal winning 4x200 freestyle relay team. He, Despond, Matthew Myers and David Riley finished in 7:18.33 for the second-place finish.
Third-year standout Vanessa Treasure of Mississauga, Ont., led Toronto’s women, claiming her second silver medal of the championships in the women’s 200 butterfly. Treasure finished in 2:13.21, just 0.28 seconds behind Victoria’s Stephanie Horner (2:12.93).
She then anchored U of T’s 4x200 freestyle relay team to a bronze-medal finish. Treasure, along with Andrea Jurenovskis, Jennifer Tapley and Bridget Coley, touched the wall in 8:14.99, good for third place.
The championships conclude tomorrow (Feb. 23) with preliminaries scheduled for 12 p.m. (EST) and finals at 8 p.m. (EST). Both sessions will be webcast live on
