The Varsity Blues men sit third and women fourth as Day 1 of the 2013 CIS swimming championships wrapped up Thursday night (Feb. 21) at the Calgary Aquatic Centre.
Toronto’s men sit three points out of second place with 163 points, behind the UBC Thunderbirds (176) and host Calgary Dinos (168).
The Blues women (74) trail the third-place Western Mustangs (83) by five points. UBC is first (232) and Calgary second (184) after Day 1.
Fifth-year veteran and Timmins, Ont., native Andrea Jurenovskis kicked off the evening with a bronze-medal finish in the 50-metre backstroke (28.30).
2013 OUA swimmer of the year Zack Chetrat (Oakville, Ont.) then earned the silver medal in the men’s 100 butterfly event (52.58), just 0.70 seconds behind UBC’s Coleman Allen (51.88). U of T’s Edward Liu and Mike Smerek finished in fourth and fifth place.
Jeremie Holdom (Toronto) and Vanessa Treasure (Mississauga, Ont.) both came from behind to finish second in the men’s and women’s 400 individual medley (IM) events, respectively. Holdom finished strong in the last 50 metres, touching the wall in a time of 4:19.67, while Treasure used her breast stroke leg to claim silver with a time of 4:42.88.
Smerek, Brian Lee, Luke Hall and Matthew Myers capped off Day 1 with a bronze-medal finish in the men’s 4x100 freestyle relay (3:18.40).
The championships resume tomorrow (Feb. 22) with preliminaries scheduled for 12 p.m. (EST) and finals at 8 p.m. (EST). All morning and evening sessions will be webcast live on
