Cross Country History

Cross country has been an intercollegiate event since 1909, when the Canadian Intercollegiate Athletic Union (CIAU) sanctioned it under its jurisdiction. Prior to that date, cross country had been popular among University colleges in inter-year or inter-faculty competition, but not as an annual event. The University of Toronto men won the first Ontario intercollegiate race in 1909, followed by McGill in 1910. The Blues won in 1911-14 and went onto win eight out of 18, tying McGill in 1931, following the War of 1914-18. Cross country joined the Canadian Interuniversity Athletic Union (CIAU) in 1963. Toronto won nine national titles from 1965-91, including three straight from 1965-67 and four in five years (1974-78).

Women's cross country joined the Ontario Women's Intercollegiate Athletic Association (OWIAA) in 1978 and the CIAU in 1980. Toronto claimed their first Ontario intercollegiate title in 1985, defeating the four-time reigning champion Western Mustangs by 20 points. Karen Dunstan placed second individually and the Blues went onto place second at the national championships. Toronto has won three national titles - their first coming in 1991, second in 2002 and third in 2017.
