On the DL With Dot - Two-A-Days
Back from our preseason tour, the Varsity Blues field hockey team began two weeks of two-a-days to continue preparing for the upcoming season. We had fitness in the mornings with Ivan, which included hill sprints, sets of stairs at Varsity Centre and weight room sessions.
In the afternoons we had two hour practices but because a large part of our team was away at ODP, we worked mainly on skills rather than tactical stuff. A lot of time was also spent on the things we identified in preseason that needed improvement. The second week the hard work continued as the day of our first games approached!
With all the ODP girls back we really began to see the things we had been working on come together. On Sunday, we played a game against our alumni that we ended up tying 2-2. It was good to finally get to play and to see how we are doing after two weeks of just training and no games.
The first half was a little rough, but by the second half we started working together and using the things we had been working on in practice, which helped us give the alumni a good game. Kaelan Watson was solid in the back as always and Jessica Aun had a great game in goal for the alumni!
As a rookie, it was a good test for us playing against sometimes bigger and stronger competition similar to what we will face in the OUA and at the CIS championships. This week we’ll be sure to keep focused to be sure we are ready for our first games of the season this weekend.
Hopefully the time and hard work we have put in these past few weeks will pay off and give us a leg up on our OUA competition. We will be on the road this weekend at UWO playing Western @ 10am and York @ 6:45 pm on Saturday, and on Sunday we play Queens @ 11:45 am. Stay tuned for the results from our games!
And that’s “the down low” from your Varsity Blues field hockey team.
GO BLUES GO!!!
