Jan 17th - It’s an Emergency

At UTRC *everything* happens on Facebook. Join UTRC and ride the interwebz or be left behind.

Team Party: It’s a FB event. Want to change practice times, post it on the group wall. Don’t know the workout: check the FB group then go creep your teammates wall-to-wall. Got a question; PM someone. Oh hey!

When one of our rowers was recognized by FACE we almost died! See article: BRAITHWAITE, WATERING RECOGNIZED THROUGH FACE

About 11 pm most nights the news feed comes alive: Tonight there’s an emergency!

There’s been a poll on the Varsity Blues site: “What was your favourite highlight of the first half of the 2009-10 season?”

We don’t care that it’s only the first half of the season. We just want to win it!

Now you have to understand. Braithwaite’s modest, in fact if you’re a successful rower you usually are. It comes with the territory. Canadian rowers have a tradition of modesty. Take a look next Olympics, they even tuck their medals into their uniforms. It’s what we do. But that doesn’t stop the team from going crazy over their success.

It was the over-breakfast topic following today’s team practice: “is the poll closed?” “Did he win?” “How many times did you vote?” “Like 5, you?”

The news feed ticks in:

Braithwaite to Christina: I thought you said that the poll was closed? Most devastating loss of my life!

(It’s close: Braithwaite 26% to 27% for Megan Brown)

Christina: The OUTRAGE!!! It must have been rigged. You may just have to learn to live vicariously through your FACE on the phys-ed website.

Moments later the Varsity Group sends out a message to the team and by the time I’ve cast another three votes we’re already riding at 31%.

Needfeed reports: the forces have been mobilized!

Day off: swim and abbs.
