WOODSIDE WORD 2

Kudos to Waterloo for their pump-up music. I tell ya, I have a beef with OUA pre-game pump-up music. I can appreciate how many tastes can be addressed through the course of a warm up, but come on, go easy on the rap. Pump-up music should make you feel like you’re gonna tear the leather off the ball every time you hit it. Rap just doesn’t incite that kind of emotion.

Whatever happened to classic staples like “Welcome to the Jungle” and the “Thunderstruck”? Waterloo has done the best at providing a good atmosphere pre-game. Come on folks; show a little love to the nostalgic athletes not into the rap revolution.

Allow me to be selfish for a moment. Overall, from a volleyball perspective, this past weekend stunk. Two losses in a combined seven sets are not ideal by any stretch of the imagination. After getting a chance to play on Friday, I was unhappy with my performance. That combined with a, I’ll use the word “reflective”, speech from Coach that same evening, I decided to make an impact on the on-court energy next time I played rather than focus on results. That turned out to be Saturday evening.

With a chance to log some serious playing time, a grand opportunity lay at my feet. I did exactly what I had planned, impact the on-court energy. My play quickly followed suit, and I was ecstatic over the results. The team was scoring and the intensity was up. The two often go hand in hand with a sport like volleyball. I garnered some words of praise from the coaches and several team members afterwards. Making the most of your opportunities as a rookie is very satisfying. I felt I did that on Saturday night.

That being said, we still lost the game, 3-1. I was far from the only person contributing to the positives and I certainly had my fair share of mistakes. It’s one thing to play well, it’s another to do so and contribute to a victory. Given a similar chance this next weekend, that is the change I hope to make.

It’s interesting to observe the different ways the guys show their intensity. Some like the keep your cool, stay in the zone kind of approach. Others show like the oh yeah, I know I’m unreal celebrations, whereas guys like myself like to get in your grill.

I met Nick, from “Nick’s Notes” the other day. He came up to me and introduced himself. What a veteran move. He seems like a good fella –ella –ella –eh. I’ll have to ask him for some blogging pointers.

Is anyone else appalled at the amount of ink used on the Leafs in the Star sport section?

Woodside Out.
