SWIMMING LEADS AFTER DAY 1 OF OUA CHAMPIONSHIPS

Second-year star Kylie Masse set a Canadian record to highlight a dominant Day 1 for the University of Toronto Varsity Blues at the 2016 OUA swimming championships on Thursday evening (Feb. 11) in London, Ont.

Toronto's men sit first with 332 points, ahead of Western (241) and McMaster (170), while the Blues women also sit atop the team standings with 356 points, ahead of Western (205) and McMaster (170).

After breaking the OUA record in the 100 backstroke preliminaries in the morning, Masse (LaSalle, Ont.) came up with a monster swim, bettering Katelyn Murdoch's previous Canadian record of 56.88, set in 2009, with a time of 56.55 seconds to earn her second straight OUA title in the event. Blues rookie Heather Lam placed second in a time of 1:00.69.

The Blues men and women each set three OUA records on Day 1. U of T's women reached the podium in every event, winning 4-of-7 gold and 10 total medals, while the Blues men won all seven events, earning 10 medals of their own.

Toronto's women's 200 freestyle relay team of Josee Barrette, Paige Schultz, Emily Russell and Jennifer Tapley started the night off right, setting a new OUA record with a winning time of 1:43.05. The Blues men of Matt Dans, Mitch Ferraro, Kyle Haas and Cameron Kidd followed suit with an OUA record time of 1:30.29.

Veteran standout Bridget Coley picked up her third career 400 freestyle victory, bettering former teammate Heather Maitland's 2012 record (4:10.98) in a time of 4:10.62. Victoria Radounski earned the silver medal in 4:12.89.

2014-15 CIS male swimmer of the year Eli Wall earned his second straight 200 breaststroke title, bettering his own OUA record in a time of 2:12.13, while rookie standout Cameron Kidd won the men's 50 freestyle, bettering the 2013 Evan Van Moerkerke (Guelph) record in a new OUA-best time of 21.91 seconds.

Second-year swimmer Oliver Straszynski won the men's 400 freestyle in a time of 3:53.31, while rookie Osvald Nitski was third in a time of 3:54.28. Hochan Ryu (1:58.11) and Nitski (2:00.54) also placed 1-2 in the men's 200 butterfly, while Kyle Haas and Daniel Kuiack finished 1-2 in the men's 100 backstroke in 54.23 and 54.43 seconds, respectively.

Veteran Paige Schultz narrowly missed the gold medal, placing second in the women's 50 freestyle in a time of 25.29, with Sherry Patel right behind her in third in 25.67.

Rounding out the individual podium finishes was veteran Melanie McDonald with a silver-medal finish in the 200 butterfly (2:15.39) and rookie Rachael Parsons, who placed third in the women's 200 breaststroke in a time of 2:33.72.
