The University of Toronto Varsity Blues men's curling team's season came to an end Friday night as round robin action wrapped up at the 2015 CIS / CCA championships in Waterloo, Ont.
After going 2-0 on Day 1, the Blues dropped a 6-4 decision to the Alberta Golden Bears and fell 11-6 to the host Laurier Golden Hawks on Friday. They had a touch schdedule going into Day 3, playing at 8 a.m., 12 p.m., and 8 p.m., and fell just shy of the playoff round.
The Blues dropped a 10-3 decision to the Saint Mary's Huskies on Friday morning but bounced back with a big 8-4 victory over the Western Mustangs.
"It was a big game since we had to win it to stay in the running for a playoff spot," said head coach John Rudd. "It was a tight game until the guys came together for a big ninth end with a string of great shots to score four."
That set up a win and you're in game versus the Winnipeg Wesman. Toronto and Winnipeg went back and forth over the course of their game but the Varsity Blues entered the tenth end with a one-point advantage after skip Evan Lilly made a double takeout in the ninth end to give his team a 6-5 lead.
A well-played final end came down to the final rock. With his team lying one, Wesmen skip Kyle Doering found a port in front of the house and took out Toronto's rock on the back of the four foot to score two and take the game 7-6, securing fourth place in the standings.
"Our guys deserved a better outcome but we cannot control outcomes only our performances," added Rudd. "The guys played an excellent game and had a strong event overall. Â From the coach's chair they showed class, humility and sportsmanship combined with strong technical skills and terrific mental toughness. Â A job well done and a successful event."
