BADMINTON ADDS INTERNATIONAL STAR TO 2011 ROSTER

The Varsity Blues badminton program is pleased to announce that two-time Pan American champion Fiona McKee has accepted her offer into the University of Toronto and has committed to play starting in the fall of 2011.

“I have known Fiona since she was three years old and have been able to watch her develop from a beginner to the elite player she is today,” said Varsity Blues head coach Wayne King. “We plan to make use of both her playing and leadership skills this season and I am sure she will be a huge addition to our team.”

McKee won five Canadian national titles while training and graduating with a kinesiology degree from the University of Calgary. She won the 2007 Romanian Open in women’s doubles and went onto earn back-to-back titles at the 2007 and 2008 Pan American Games in women’s doubles and mixed doubles, respectively.

In 2009, McKee competed in the mixed doubles event at the world badminton championships in Hyderabad, India. The Toronto native inherited her skills from her father, Jamie, who won a silver medal in men’s singles action at the 1978 Commonwealth Games.

McKee has spent the last year playing for Club Ikast in Denmark and comes to U of T to complete her bachelor’s degree in education at OISE.
