BANSLEY GOLDEN AT CANADIAN BEACH VOLLEYBALL CHAMPIONSHIPS

Varsity Blues alumna Heather Bansley was crowned the senior women’s champion at the 2010 Canadian beach volleyball championships, August 27-29, at Ashbridges Bay in Toronto.

Bansley of Waterdown, Ont., and partner Liz Maloney defeated UBC’s Jamie Broders and Liz Cordonier 2-1 (21-16, 17-21, 15-10) in the gold-medal match on Sunday afternoon. Boders and Cordonier, the 2010 CIS athlete of the year, were the first pair at the championships to force Bansley and Maloney into a third game.

A two-time CIS all-Canadian, Bansley completed her fifth and final year of eligibility with the Blues in 2009-10. The English and linguistics major ranked first on the OUA leader board in points per game (5.17), kills per game (4.26) and serving aces per game (0.70). She also led the Blues with a combined 25 kills and 41 digs as Toronto earned their first provincial title and berth to the CIS national championship since 2004 this past season.

Fellow Blues alumna Kristina Valjas finished fifth, while second-year student Rebecca Crosier was ninth in the senior women’s division. Second-year middle hitter Alexandra Hudson placed fifth in the senior women’s division 2 category.
