BLUES FOOTBALL RACE FOR CHARITY

Four University of Toronto Varsity Blues football players traded in their tackling dummies for hospital beds and raced for charity in the Toronto East General Hospital Foundation (TEGH) Danforth Dash on Friday, August 1.

Racing the Pilaros bed, linebacker Scott Smith (Toronto), quarterback George Gretes (Toronto) and offensive linemen Ross Asaro (Toronto) and Chris Kowalchuk (Brampton, Ont.) won three preliminary races and were awarded the Golden Bed Pan Trophy defeating Tippet-Richardson in the final of the fourth annual TEGH Danforth Dash Bed Race.

This year’s race, presented and supported by Toronto Councillor Case Ootes and MPP George Smitherman, kicked-off the 16th annual Taste of the Danforth street festival and saw close to 40 teams race beds down the one-block race route.

The 2009 event raised over $40,000 towards the expansion of the Emergency Department at TEGH.
