Robert Pitter leapt to great heights with Varsity Blues track and field, earning an amazing 12 medals, including six gold.
Rob started his high jump career at U of T with a bronze medal finish at the 1977 OUAA Outdoor Championships, and his jump of 1.90m was only a sign of things to come. At the next conference meet he cleared 2.04m indoors, winning the gold medal and setting a meet record. In year two Rob not only claimed gold and silver medals in high jump, but he was also a member of the silver medal winning outdoor 1,600m relay team and the record setting indoor distance medley squad.
Rob’s track and field abilities were a large part of the Varsity Blues men’s inaugural CIAU Indoor Track and Field Championship win. With a 2.18m jump, Rob won the first-ever CIAU high jump gold. He then followed that up the next year with back-to-back OUAA high jump crowns, yet another CIAU gold, and a consecutive CIAU team title for U of T track and field.
Rob’s track and field career reached its pinnacle when he soared over 2.21m (7’ 3”) at Penn State. In 2004, a jump of that height would still have ranked Rob number two in Canada.
Rob Pitter was one of a long line of elite high jumpers with the Varsity Blues and remains the third best CIS high jumper ever.
