Phyllis Haslam was an individual champion during her three seasons with the U of T swimming team. She helped the team to a provincial title in 1935-36 and the Social Work Faculty team to interfaculty titles from 1934-36. Phyllis established two records in the breaststroke and backstroke in 1934-35. She served as swimming club president from 1935-36.
Before attending U of T, Phyllis swam for the University of Saskatchewan, winning four individual and four team titles. While there, she broke the Canadian record in both the 100 and 220 yard breaststroke events.
Phyllis also competed nationally and internationally, breaking a world record in the 100 yard breaststroke at the 1934 British Empire Games Trials. At the British Empire Games in 1934, Phyllis won silver in the 200 breaststroke and gold in the 3x100 yard medley relay.
She served as president of the WAA directorate from 1962-72. Phyllis was inducted into the Saskatchewan Sports Hall of Fame and Museum in 1974 and was made an Officer in the Order of Canada in 1978.
