Paul Williams joined the Varsity Blues as a seasoned CIAU runner. After winning his first CIAU cross country title as a Guelph Gryphon in 1977, Paul transferred to U of T and won two more individual titles in 1978 and 1980.

Paul is a three-time CIAU all-Canadian (once at Guelph, twice at Toronto) and was a member of U of T’s CIAU cross country championship team in 1978, as well as the OUAA and CIAU indoor track and field championship team in 1980-81.

While attending U of T, Paul competed at the 1979 and 1983 FISU games, before becoming a coach for the 1990 games in Kobe, Japan.

He won a gold medal at the 1990 Goodwill Games in the 5,000m and a bronze medal at the 1990 Commonwealth Games in the 10,000m.

A four-time national champion in the 5,000m, he held and/or broke several Canadian records for 3,000m, 5,000m and 10,000m from 1983-91. In 1984, Paul became the first Canadian to ever run the 10,000m in under 28 minutes (27:55).

Paul is a three-time Olympian, having competed in Los Angeles (1984), Seoul (1988) and Barcelona (1992) in the 5,000m and 10,000m races. He finished in the top 25 in both the 5,000m and 10,000m events in Los Angeles. He is also a member of the Guelph Gryphons Hall of Fame.
