An outstanding freestyle swimmer, Merrily Stratten earned a Silver T during three seasons with the Blues (1969-70 through 1972-73), during which she led the team to three league championships. She won numerous OWIAA medals and CIAU Gold in the 100 free. She represented Canada at the 1970 and 1973 World University Games and at the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich.
Stratten enjoyed great success as head coach of the Varsity women's Swimming for five years from 1978-1983, as the Blues won the OWIAA league crown and CIAU national title each year. She was voted CIAU women's Swim Coach of the Year in 1978-79, 1980-81 and 1982-83. She was also a coach of the Canadian swim team at the 1981 World University Games. Stratten joined the Faculty of the U of T School of Physical and Health Education in 1989. Her older brother, Gaye Stratten, a multiple champion in Swimming and Water Polo, was inducted into the Sports Hall of Fame in 1990.
