Marco Cavazzoni achieved several Varsity Blues “firsts” during his time at U of T. He was the first to be named U of T’s athlete of the year for two consecutive seasons (1988, 1989). The four-time OUA all-star and five-time CIAU all-Canadian swimmer was a member of five provincial and one national championship teams during his time in the blue and white.

In his rookie season, Marco was named an all-Canadian and helped U of T to the 1985 OUA title and a CIS silver medal.  That season Marco also became the first Blue ever to win five events at a single Ontario championship, taking top spot in the 100m breaststroke, 200m breaststroke, 200m individual medley, 4x100m medley relay and 4x50m medley relay.  In 1986, he set the OUAA 100m breaststroke record and was integral in helping the team to the national championship title.  Marco then bettered his own OUA 100m breaststroke record in 1987 en route to another provincial team title and national silver medal.

Ranked in the top 25 in the world, Marco placed fifth at the 1987 World Student Games and fourth at the Pan American Games. He won four gold medals and one bronze at the 1988 OUA Championships and went on to medal three times at the CIAU meet, claiming the 200m breaststroke title. That year, Marco was also selected to represent Canada at dual meets in Germany, where he earned a bronze medal.

In 1989, Marco ended his intercollegiate career with a bang. Ranked twelfth in the world, he earned national titles in both the 100m and 200m breaststroke and took a silver medal in the 4 x 100m medley relay.
