Joseph Breen was an outstanding halfback and captain in the Varsity Blues 1920 Grey Cup champions. He competed with distinction for Engineering in 3 intramural sports; the 1915 Mulock Cup football champions, Track (Gold Medals in the 100yd and 200yd sprints in 1919 and 1920_ and Hockey (championship team in 1920). Following Graduation, he was captain of the Parkdale Canoe Club and later the Toronto Argonauts in the Canadian Rugby Union.
From 1929-34, Breen was coach of the first senior Football team at the University of Western Ontaro, and won the league title in 1931. He was a referee in Big Four Football from 1935-40, active in amateur Baseball and served as President of the Canadian Senior Golf Association. He is a member of the Football Hall of Fame (1963), Canadian Sports Hall of Fame (1975) and the UWO Sports Hall of Fame (1987).
