John Harrison Mullett was a jack of all trades in University of Toronto sport from 1937-42. He played senior intercollegiate soccer from 1937-40, winning back-to-back provincial titles in 1938-39 and 1939-40 and also earned a men’s doubles intercollegiate championship as a member of the tennis team in 1939. Mullett competed in interfaculty baseball (1939, 42), basketball (1938-42), volleyball (1940-42), badminton (1942), track and field (1941-42) and squash (1942) during his time at U of T.
He was an inaugural recipient of the George M. Biggs Trophy in 1942, awarded annually to the graduating male student-athlete who contributed most to university athletics from the standpoint of leadership, sportsmanship and performance. Mullett was also named the outstanding dentistry athlete of the year just before graduation.
Mullett was a member of the advisory board of the men’s athletic association and the dental athletic committee, as well as the chairman of the intramural sports committee in 1941-42. He went on to serve as a captain in the Canadian Dental Corps in World War II.
John Harrison Mullett passed away on August 25, 2011 at the age of 92.
