Known as both “Long John” and the “Coffin Corner Specialist,” Varsity Blues half-back John D. “Jack” Sinclair earned a storied place in U of T athletic history. A member of the Varsity Blues program for eight years (1926-33), Sinclair played football and ice hockey. He was known as one of the most difficult rearguards to play against, because of his ability to rapidly change the pace of his game, playing short balls followed quickly by long soaring blasts down the length of the field.

Despite his powerful play, Sinclair was a consistent athlete who displayed sportsmanship and modesty at all times. In 1932-33, he scored nine of Toronto’s 10 points in the Varsity’s final 10-3 win over Queen’s for the intercollegiate title. During the game he kicked a perfect placement, intercepted a Queen’s forward pass to run 45 yards for a spectacular touchdown, and intercepted three other plays in defense of the Varsity Blues lead. This was a perfect finish to a stellar season for Sinclair.

Sinclair’s longevity with the University of Toronto is rarely rivaled. He played eight seasons for the Blues, two in Arts and Science and six as a student in the Faculty of Medicine, earning nine First Colors. He served as captain of the intercollegiate championship team 1932-33 and as captain of the second string ‘Orphuns’ in 1928. He was a member of the U of T Athletic Directorate, serving as vice-president in his second year. Sinclair was also a member of the T-Holders.

Few members of the Varsity Blues sporting legacy can speak of the length and breadth of career enjoyed by John D. “Jack” Sinclair. His exploits at Varsity Stadium have been long remembered.
