Squash player John D. H. "Jay" Gillespie was a member of the Varsity team from 1974-78 and 1980-81. Jay's play was central to the team's string of OUA championships 1976-78 and 1981. A strong team player, Jay excelled in individual competition as well, claiming individual championships in 1976-78. He was selected as a U of T Labatt's Athlete of the Week in 1977 and elected Trinity College's Athlete of the Year in 1978. Jay earned his Bronze T in 1978 and his Silver T in 1981. Squash continues to play an important role in Jay's life. He was the Canadian National Singles Champion (35+) in consecutive seasons, 1993 and 94l the 1998 world Doubles Champion (40+) and the Ontario 1999 Provincial Doubles Champions (40+). Jay has also acted as a coach for several junior international players, coaching the German and French National Junior champions. Today, Jay is a teacher in the Greater Toronto Area.
