Jim was the highest ranked swimming recruit in Canada long before he joined the Varsity Blues. In 1966, he competed in the 100-yard backstroke at the Commonwealth Games, won the bronze medal at the 1967 Pan American Games, and placed fifth in the 100-metre backstroke final at the 1968 Olympic Games
Buoyed by those incredible experiences, Jim joined the Blues in 1969, setting CIAU and Canadian records in the 200-yard backstroke and winning gold medals in both the 100- and 200-yard backstroke events in 1970 and 1971. Jim was also named the CIAU swimmer of the year in 1970.
