Even before arriving at the University of Toronto in 1953, Jim Carnwath had made his mark in Canadian badminton circles as national junior singles champion of 1952 and 1953. This early success continued at the university level, where he earned four intercollegiate team titles (1954-58), three intercollegiate singles titles (1955-58) and a doubles championship in 1958. For his efforts, Jim earned his Bronze T in 1956. He also served as president of the Badminton Club in his final year at U of T.
Without a doubt, Jim dominated Canadian badminton throughout the 1950s and 1960s, when he was ranked #1 nationally three times; a six-time Ontario singles champion; and a three-time doubles and mixed doubles champion. He represented Canada internationally at Thomas Cup tournaments in 1958, 1961, 1964 and 1967.
Turning to the seniors and masters' competitions in the 1980s and 1990s, Jim earned eight men's singles championships, four men's
doubles championships, one mixed doubles championship, as well as two USA singles seniors and masters championships, two men's doubles and three mixed doubles championships.
Jim, who is a Judge with the Ontario Superior Court of Justice, is also involved with the administration of the Canadian Badminton Association.
