A versatile athlete, "Hud" Stewart received Special First T awards in Boxing, Football, Rugger and Track. He also played Lacrosse but it was not an official intercollegiate sport. He was a member of the 1932-33 Varsity championship Boxing team and was on the 1932 Canadian Olympic team in track. In U of T Intramural competition, he won five gold medals in track and field, and also participated in Baseball, Boxing and Hockey. He was a member of the men's Athletic Directorate and Advisory Board, and has been active for many years in the Men's T-Holders' Association, serving as its President from 1980-82.
Stewart founded the U of T Masters Swim Club, the first such club in Canada, and in 1972 set the Masters world record for 200m backstroke for ages 60-64. He has won 25 Master Gold Medals while representing U of T, including two gold medals at the 1985 World Masters Games in Toronto. The author of five books, he is a special lecturer at the U of T Centre for Urban and Regional Planning and also teaches in U of T School of Continuing Studies.
